A big thank you to Black Tongues- The Merchant Of Fine Wines, a supporting partner of PinK ElePhanT sporting events.

Black Tongues is the first to stock Spain’s finest wine at affordable prices. 3 of its most popular wines are Cillero Tempranillo, Bonjorne Macabeo/Sauvignon Blanc and Bonjorne 3 meses en barrica.

Cillero Tempranillo is a dry and rich red wine with intense violet hues. Known for its persistent and pleasant aftertaste, it is best paired with light/dark meats, seafood, cheese and barbecues. A complex yet smooth wine, it is perfect for a lady with exquisite taste.

If a cocktail is more your style, shake up a world famous Spanish sangria at home!

All you have to do is mix Cillero Tempranillo with a jug of different sliced fruits such as orange, lemon, apple, peach or berries, throw in a sweetener such as honey, add a splash of triple sec to taste.

If you prefer a rich and fruity wine, Bonjorne Macabeo/Sauvignon Blanc is for you. Velvety and elegant with light green notes combined with a white fruity nose, it is best enjoyed with seafood and fish.

Another possibility is lively coloured Bonjorne 3 meses en barrica, a carefully elaborated wine with fruity vanilla wood essence.

Passing Of US Hate Crimes Act

The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Act passed through Congress on 22/10/09. It was attached to a defense department bill that will also authorize $130 billion to continue fighting the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Senate voted 68-29 to pass the bill, which adds sexual orientation, gender, disability or gender identity to current hate crimes law, which already defines a hate crime as one motivated by a person's religion, race, national origin or color. President Obama has promised to sign the bill.

Although the LGBT community are not the only ones who will benefit from this new law, the community has been working for more than 11 years to get a bill passed that offers some form of protection against hate crimes.

The law will allow federal prosecutors to step in to try violent hate-crime cases if local authorities cannot or will not secure an appropriate conviction. It also opens up federal funding for local law enforcement to handle the typically high cost of investigation in such cases.

The act is named to honor Matthew Shepard as well as James Byrd, an African-American resident of Texas brutally dragged to death in 1998 in a notorious hate crime.

Matthew Shepard was a college student in Laramie, Wyoming in October 1998 when he left a bar with two men who would later beat him and abandoned him in a rural area. Comatose, he was found the next morning by a bicyclist who initially mistook him for a scarecrow. Matthew was so badly beaten, he died five days later.
Matthew Shepard's story touched the nation. Candlelight vigils were held across the nation. Celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres spoke out against anti-gay violence.

To this day, the violent crime against Matthew Shepard is a symbol of the violence that gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people experience.

The Matthew Shepard Foundation was founded by Matthew's mother, Judy Shepard, now an activist for LGBT rights and hate crimes legislation. The foundation works for civil rights, works to "erase hate" by working for hate crime legislation and education about hate crimes and contribute to the work of lgbt youth organizations.

Drool Worthy Athlete - Dara Torres

Dara Torres, 41, is the first American swimmer to compete in five Olympics and the oldest to qualify for a Games. She has won nine Olympic medals, starting with a gold as a member of the 4x100-meter freestyle relay in 1984, when she was 17.

Torres set a world record in the 50 freestyle in 1983, two years before the current world-record holder in the event, Libby Trickett of Australia, was born. After participating in the 1988 and the 1992 Olympics, Torres retired, only to return to make a cannonball-like splash at the 2000 Sydney Games.

She won five medals in Sydney, including individual bronzes in the 50 and 100 freestyles and the 100 butterfly, to become the most decorated female of those Games. Afterward, Torres again hung up her suit. In the next seven years, she married and divorced, did broadcasting work for the Golf Channel, and in 2006 gave birth to her first child, daughter Tessa, with her partner, David Hoffman.

In May 2006, she resumed training with the goal of losing the 36 pounds she gained during her pregnancy. She entered a masters competition and swam fast enough to qualify for the 2008 United States trials.

In November, Torres had surgery to remove a bone spur that had caused a partial rotator cuff tear in her right shoulder. She missed four weeks of training to recover, but did not skip a beat at the Beijing 2008 Olympic trials, recording personal bests in the 50 and 100 freestyles in winning both.
