Our Stories

I went to a Oyoung Wenfeng's book launch of "Our Stories" 欧阳文风编著 "我们的故事".

Written in mandarin, "Our Stories" is a compilation of the true accounts of 15 ethnic Chinese lesbian and gays from around the world.

This is one of his many books (both english and mandarin) about LGBTQ lifestyles and the people who walk the talk.

What stood out to me about him was, one word......courage.

A once married Malaysian gay man who came out of the closet in a politically-religiously conservative country to his wife, got a scholarship to study theology in New York and became a pastor of his church 3 years ago.

He met all these major obstacles with out and proud courage......religion, career and relationships.

He believes in the importance of more LGBTQ themed literature, not so much as a resource for LGBTQs but as a resource of heterosexuals in general.

I agree with him wholeheartedly.

Throughout history, literature has educated countless people across borders to provide a glimpse of life we would otherwise not known about.

Just knowing there are others in a similar situation as you will make this road much easier.

Learning and sharing mistakes/triumphs will make this road less lonely.

Reading about how others climbed mountains and crossed valleys would inspire you.

Debunking misconceptions and reflecting the truth would serve to improve the relationships within our community and the community at large.

We are often guilty of judging while we lament when others do the same to us.

This might seem like a lofty ideal to some but the fact is that every little bit counts.

No matter what your situation is, take heart that it will pass and *God will not give you what you cannot overcome.

Do reach out to your LGBTQ friends for mutual support and encouragement.

There is no need to feel lost anymore, finding a safe place for yourself should not be an issue in this day and age.

There are many associations, organisations and resources who cater to the community.

I will update with a list of those soon.

*When I use the word "God" here, I mean in whichever religious form God is to you. I am not advocating a certain religion.
